High Street ignition

Mid-way through 2021, we got the keys to a retail unit on Porlock High Street. What’s happened since has been a revelation.

Sandwiched between the hairdressers and a beauty salon, our HQ has become part of village high street life. The shop window makes us visible to residents and traders on familiar, “easy to walk through the front door” terms, which has sparked unforeseen conversations and initiatives driven by others, rather than us.

We share our HQ with those who love it as much as we do: book clubs, art groups, musicians and curious passers by.

Tinkering with the window, joyfully we provoke conversation or sing loudly for the arts.

We’re open to listen, muck in and make a difference

Although it’s beautiful here, surrounded by the wilds and sea of Exmoor National Park, Porlock faces unique challenges - rural isolation, low social mobility for the young and a lack of cultural diversity.

Responding to calls for help, we’re joining forces with local organisations to bring positive change to the village. Whether devising pop-up events to bolster the high street, originating groups like Porlock Tree Toddlers or simply lending equipment, we want to be part of a bigger picture.
